Co-Founder & Investment Committee Chair, Maybole Capital Partners
About
Steve Smith is Co-Founder and Investment Committee Chair of Maybole Capital Partners, a UK-based single-family office with a presence in Singapore, where he oversees his family's reinsurance and insurance-linked securities (ILS) allocations. He has invested in ILS, including catastrophe bonds, since the late 1990s.
He began his career as a financial analyst in Morgan Stanley's Investment Banking Insurance Group in New York in 1981, working on insurance and reinsurance transactions that incorporated alternative risk transfer (ART) structures.
After law school and a period practicing M&A law at Skadden, Arps, in New York, Steve returned to Morgan Stanley in the early 1990s, where he primarily focused on Bermuda-based transactions. These included the excess-liability carriers ACE and EXEL, and the property-catastrophe reinsurers formed after Hurricane Andrew in 1992 — among them Partner Re, Centre Cat Ltd., Tempest Re, and Renaissance Re, as well as Lloyd's of London's early 1990s restructuring and the World Bank's early catastrophe-bond feasibility assessment.
Steve has also co-founded a NASDAQ company, which he served as Chairman and CEO from inception through the sale of the company to a much larger NYSE company, as well as founding a fintech company that was ultimately acquired by PIMCO.
Steve currently resides in Singapore.
